Henning comes from behind in final round to win NCAA hammer title
Published by
After an exciting women's hammer throw final on Thursday, the men continued the excitement. Virginia Tech's Alexander Ziegler started off the first flight by throwing inches under his season best in the first two rounds and then launching a new season best in the third round, while his teammate Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech) also threw over 70 meters. Walter Henning (LSU) watched and waited for the second flight to warm up. Henning dominated the second flight, coming within two feet of Ziegler and setting up a showdown in the finals. The finals got off to a slow start and Ziegler held on to his lead until the last round, when Henning overtook him by a meter and a half. Ziegler, with one more attempt to win the competition, who has been injured this year and only returned to form in the last few weeks, also improved his best (and was just inches off of his PR) but was not able take the lead back from Henning. Lomnicky, who was hoping to win his second NCAA hammer throw title and join his sister as a 2010 champion, placed third and Steffen Nerdal (Memphis) took fourth.
